Tw TeeVee (windows phone 7)

Published 17 May 11 09:50 AM | Mark Wildenberg

I will do this post in English, as I am targeting a broader audience. The last few weeks I was busy polishing a new Windows Phone 7 television application. Watch a live broadcast on your windows phone using your own Media Center Device.

Just to get you in the mood, a few pictures of Tw TeeVee:

Now that you are all eager and warmed up! How to get started!

  • Install DvbLink
  • Download Tw TeeVee
  • Configure your phone

If you just want to get an idea, run the demo! Skip the DvbLink installation and only install Tw TeeVee. During initial configuration uncheck the Is DvbLink installed? and you have the demo version (no network access necessary). No hassle, no fuss ().

Install DvbLink

Pre requisite is you installed the DvbLink software on your Media Center PC (including the Network Pack). DvbLink will deliver the stream over the network and you phone will pick that up!

Remember the UserName and password! You have to use that later on when configuring Tw TeeVee! If you have any questions on dvblink you can use the following communities:

Download Tw TeeVee

Goto the Zune download link and install Tw TeeVee. You will get several warnings before you end up in the Zune Marketplace.

The other option is to browse the market place and search for Tw TeeVee and install it from there.

Configuration of Tw TeeVee

To get started I would advice you  to Turn your Wifi on and use the LAN network (and not your mobile network).

When you have local network access start Tw TeeVee. If you have not configured Tw TeeVee you will automatically see the configuration screen. You will have to setup the following screens:

In the configuration is where it all comes together. We will:

  • Configure the DvbLink pc network location
  • Set the login credentials
  • Decide weather or not to allow monitoring
  • and finish the installation
Configure the DvbLink pc Network Location

Have the IP address of you DvbLink pc available as well as the Port the DvbLink server is running on. BE SURE YOUR WIFI CONNECTION of your phone IS ON. The port is configured in the DvbLink network pack installation, the ip address you can find using the following guide. For my installation the pc is located at 192.168.1.100 on port 8080:

Set the Login Credentials

The login credentials of the media center TV stream are set during the installation of DvbLink network pack. Default credentials are user, admin.

Allow Monitoring

The monitoring is used to enhance your Tw TeeVee experience for future versions. I will gather the following information:

  • Exceptions occurred
  • Number of times the TV Stream gets interrupted
  • Time spent on the TV screen
  • Number of times Tw TeeVee was started

Of course all without sending your personal information (no ip address / accounts / etc. is sent)

Finish Configuration

And finally press the finish button or the back button of your  phone. This will finalize you installation. If you want to return, select the settings button and return.

I hope you will like Tw TeeVee. Drop me a not for any feedback or comments.

Regards Mark

Cool! I think we've talked about this app during GeekNight in The Hague! Very cool you finished the app. Will it also work from 'outside' your LAN?

Indeed we have met! Nice to see that you found my blog.

You can use Tw TeeVee via you mobile network, or via a remote wifi network. The only thing is that you have to configure your home router / firewall and to look up you public IP address:

- set a forward rule in your router (port 8080 - 8085), to you local pc (ie. 192.168.1.100)

- check you router's public IP address (address not starting with 192.168 or 10 or 172.16-32)

Be carefull. The latency of the mobile operator network is much higher which results in unstable connections.

I do have it working, at least I can receive the channel list.

Too bad 'something' (maybe my firewall at home) is blocking 'viewing' the channels.

What about buying the app in the Netherlands, without a 'working' creditcard, is there another way to get the full version? I would like to pay for it, but are unable to do so :(

I am working on an add supported version of Tw TeeVee. The add supported version will be available as a free download.

the error on streaming could mean you have some ports blocked:

- 8080 is used for the channel list

- 8081 till 8085 are used for streaming

Dvb link can stream four channels simultaneously. Be sure to forward all five ports.

If that's not working, try it with your local WIFI first.

Cool, if you have any comments, please let me know. My own personal favorite (after the add supported version) is a Wake On Wan function!

Care to open up the lid on how you created this app? Been fiddling around abit with this myself. Sofar I can easily download the page from the webserver which contains the streaming url, but if I set the MediaElement to use this URL it's not streaming

# Mark Wildenberg said on May 26, 2011 08:18 PM:

It is not that difficult. Be sure:

- Zune is not started, use the WpConnect tool

- open the stream as though it is a progressive download. Use the following format:

mms://localhost:8080/?HMEExt=.wmv

Happy coding!

# Mark Wildenberg said on May 26, 2011 08:37 PM:

ps. if you enjoy, please leave a comment in the marketplace.

# Scrappy Doo said on May 27, 2011 04:03 PM:

I'll definately add a comment in the marketplace as soon as I figured this all out ;)

I'm opening mms://<ip/host>:808x/?HMEExt=.wmv but nothing pops-up on my screen. I've been sniffing the traffic and the only difference I see in the request Teevee makes and my little program makes is that Teevee has the connection: keep-alive set in the headers.

How do you set MediaElement to progressive download?

# Mark Wildenberg said on May 27, 2011 04:22 PM:

You need to have good timing, immediately after posting you have to pick up the stream! Try first with a Silverlight project on you pc, you have more debugging possibilities there. For the rest you have to figure it out yourself. It is all I can give you.

ps. Don't connect zune

ps II: do not use the emulator, it won't work

If you continue to have problems send me a PB on facebook
