We are very happy to announce the start of the registration for the designertopia conference February 1st/2nd in London. We have a very cool list of well known speakers from the designer community and Microsoft Corporation will be there to present the latest user experience technology and tools in the keynote and in the breakouts.

Now available for download: "The Road to Open Document Standards" from IDC.
This independent study, based on an IDC survey of Nordic companies, provides an overview of interoperability issues and options with a focus on document standards such as Open XML and ODF. The report is summarized in its synopsis as follows:
This study is a fact-based analysis of the emerging open document standards, Open XML and ODF. The study is structured in two parts: An overview of the framework around open standards and open document standards in particular. The second part looks in detail on what we can learn about the adoption of open standards from IDC's Nordic survey of companies and organizations carried out in August 2006. "We believe that multiple open document standards are going to exist in the market – just as the case would be with proprietary standards – and each will mirror certain needs in the market", says Per Andersen, Managing Director for IDC Nordic.

Gisteren gereleased. Wat is het ? Photosynth is een tool waarmee je van een set digitale foto's een 3D model kunt maken. Op dit moment is een Tech Preview beschikbaar waarmee je de eerste resultaten kunt bekijken. De preview is te zien op :

Stel je de mogelijkheden eens voor :
- je schiet een aantal foto's en bouwt een Photosynth model waarna je dit kunt verwerken in je eigen Role Playing Game
- je ziet een bijzonder gebouw en maakt een foto. De foto zou je kunnen gebruiken als zoek argument op Live Search en daarna heb je alle bijzonderheden op je mobiel
- je wilt nu eindelijk eens de Notre Dame in Parijs zonder mensen er om heen fotograferen. Deze technologie maakt het mogelijk een model te maken zonder de variabelen die steeds door je beeld wandelen
Ik weet het .... ik draaf door en dit zijn nog geen concreet (aangekondigde) feautures maar eh .... iedereen snapt natuurlijk waar dit naar toe gaat.

Wow ... Ik zit nu in een hoekje van het "Partner Pavillion" dit stukje tekst te typen. De afgelopen dagen hebben 350+ Nederlanders kunnen genieten van het Europese evenement op het gebied van software ontwikkeling op het Microsoft Platform : TechEd 2006. Opvallend is dat de Nederlandse delegatie na de UK de grootste aanwezige groep is .... wij verslaan Frankrijk, Duitsland en Spanje !!!
De afgelopen week is het best te vergelijken met een rollercoaster-ride. Veel sessies, een keynote met een 11-jarig meisje uit Pakistan gecertificeerd als Microsoft Developer (zie de foto ...), veel nieuwe technologie (.Net 3.0 en Vista :-)) en veel ruimte om collega ontwikkelaars te ontmoeten.
Gisterenavond werd de Nederlandse borrel aangeboden in de Barcelona City Hall Nightclub. 216 Nederlanders zijn daar geweest om collega's te ontmoeten en enigzins te ontspannen. Opvallend was de samenstelling van het publiek ... Ook hier werd duidelijk dat 97 % van de software ontwikkelaars in Nederland man zijn ... Hier is zeker ruimte voor beweging en om dit te benadrukken werd afgelopen dinsdagavond de eerste Girl/Geek dinner georganiseerd. Dames waren automatisch welkom, heren alleen per uitnodiging en als partner ... Dit idee is oorspronkelijk in London gestart en is daar zeer succesvol (http://girlygeekdom.blogspot.com/). Mogelijk een idee voor DevDays in Nederland ?
De hoeveelheid energie die los komt bij het zien van de laatste technologie is enorm. Vlak achter mij vinden nu de finales plaats van "Speaker Idols" : deelnemers die in een onderlinge wedstrijd proberen de titel van "Idol" te veroveren door een spetterende presentatie te geven over de nieuwste features. Blijkbaar speelt volume een rol in deze wedstrijd want het is hier een takke-herrie (of moet het nu takken-herrie zijn ?)
Gedurende de afgelopen dagen heb ik met veel mensen gesproken uit de communities. Het is zeer opvallend hoeveel mensen grote hoeveelheden van hun prive-tijd besteden met het ondersteunen van anderen op het gebied van technologie. Het zgn. Microsoft Valuable Professional programma helpt uitstekend in de ondersteuning van deze communities en is mede bepalend voor het succes van .Net in de komende tijd. Mijn petje af voor deze mensen ...
Nog 1.5 dag te gaan hier in Barcelona ... (helaas moet ik zelf vanavond al weer terug naar een koud nederland) Ik weet zeker dat er nog veel moois langs gaat komen.

Ofline versie van NY Times. Uitstekend voorbeeld hoe je een krant op een PC zou kunnen lezen. Data wordt als XML naar je PC gestreamd en lokaal gerenderd. Tijdens de beta periode heb je gratis toegang tot de content.

Today Microsoft is announcing the next MIX conference, MIX07, to be held in Las Vegas at The Venetian hotel on April 30 – May 2, 2007. A save the date web page goes live today on the new MIX site, http://visitmix.com/, and registration will open in early January.
MIX is Microsoft’s premiere conference for web developers, designers and business professionals. MIX07 will explore the next generation web technologies that help consumer-oriented, web-based businesses unlock new revenue opportunities and lower development costs. MIX is a forum for discussing ways to bring technologies such as Atlas, WPF/E, Media Center Edition, IE, and the Expression suite together in a way that enables developers and designers to deliver rich web experiences that drive business results. In the coming weeks, you’ll hear more about the themes, keynotes, sessions, labs, community outreach, and other initiatives that go into making a great conference that attendees find valuable, memorable, actionable, and fun.
Last year, MIX06 filled up a few weeks prior to the event. We are announcing MIX07 earlier this time to provide more notice to you and your customers and partners; keep in mind that MIX attendance is limited by design to ensure an intimate experience.
MIX07 will offer an Early Bird rate of US$995 until March 15. After March 15, the regular rate of US$1195 will apply.
